If you've been looking at new Volvo models recently, you've likely noticed a change in nomenclature when it comes to the powertrains that you can get with each new Volvo model. While the outgoing T5 and T6 engines were excellent in their own right, some new tech has helped add even more to your Volvo driving experience. With the new B5 and B6 Volvo engines, you get mild-hybrid technology to assist in your everyday driving needs, helping you save fuel on your trips from King of Prussia to Conshohocken and Collegeville. Just visit Jim Wynn Volvo Cars to experience the new powertrain options for yourself!

Powertrain Differences - From Traditional to Mild-Hybrid
Volvo has worked tirelessly to develop their combustion engine technology to produce more power while reducing weight and friction. All of these advances have helped improve efficiency while increasing performance, giving you an exciting feel behind the wheel and less time spent filling up at gas stations on your road trips. That said, it was time to take that focus on efficiency an step further, and that's why both the T5 and T6 engines have gotten a little electrified boost.
In every model where you'd previously find a T5 or T6 forced induction combustion engine, you'll now find a B5 or B6 mild-hybrid powerplant instead. It's the same engine configuration as before, but it now includes some electrified assistance to help save fuel in certain situations.
Classic T5 Performance
The current Volvo T5 model is a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that puts out 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It's a great setup for delivering punchy torque and can still achieve up to 35 mpg on the highway in some of our smaller Volvo models.
The Replacement B5 Setup
Now, Volvo has added a mild hybrid system to that 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder arrangement that offers 13 horsepower of electric power that kicks in to help get you up to speed from a stop without the excessive fuel burn that this used to require. Depending on your driving habits, this can improve fuel economy by up to 30 percent, especially when in city traffic around Norristown.
Classic T6 Performance
The outgoing T6 engine was also a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, but this one used both turbocharging and supercharging to deliver a stunning level of performance without adding a tremendous amount of weight or any displacement to the engine. The result was an impressive 295 horsepower and 316 pound-feet of torque that could make even the heaviest Volvo XC90 model feel light on its feet.
Upgraded B6 Performance
Much like its B5 counterpart, the new Volvo B6 powertrain adopts mild-hybrid technology to help deliver smoother and more efficient acceleration from a stop. It also delivers power for the type of low-speed cruising you encounter in stop and go traffic, and can help massively cut down on fuel costs during your busy commute.
New Generation B5 and B6 Mild-Hybrid Engines
As said, Volvo Cars prides itself on refining and improving upon all previous successes. It's as if the automaker houses a collective mind constantly on the move - innovating, progressing, persevering. Given the harsh Scandinavian environment from where and why Volvo XC-Series luxury SUVs are designed, adaptability and resourcefulness are valued attributes. Much like our environment in Exeter.
Other B5/B6 Powertrain Benefits
Not only can these mild-hybrid systems help you save fuel on a short commute, but the 48-Volt battery that powers them is recharged every time you hit the brakes. This regenerative braking technology means that there is no need for you to plug in your vehicle to keep the hybrid system running. It simply restores energy each time you slow down, saving it for when you need that low-speed acceleration assistance once again.
In addition, this mild-hybrid system is lightweight and compact, meaning you won't notice any change in handling or ride quality with the new powertrain. You'll simply find yourself spending less money on fuel every month, without any negative compromises to your daily driving experience.
